INDIANAPOLIS-- An Indianapolis woman is recalling the terrifying carjacking that led to an IMPD officer shooting and killing a 20-year-old man on Indy's northeast side.
The deadly police shooting started with a carjacking at the Marathon gas station in the 2900 block of Post road.
The victim says she pulled into the gas station on her way to work when she was ambushed by an armed thief around 9 a.m. Tuesday.
"I got out of my car," said the victim. "He put a gun to my belly and said, 'Give me everything'."
That victim, who asked not to be identified, said the carjacker apologized for threatening her life, while 3 other suspects remained in their car.
"I asked him like, 'Why are you doing this?' He said, 'I'm hungry. I need money.' He said, 'You're beautiful, but I'm sorry, but I need money'," said the victim.
A short time later, an IMPD officer spotted the victim's stolen car at the nearby Cavalier Court apartments near 38th and Post.
20-year-old Jerrett Gray Jr., who police claim was seen on video committing the carjacking, was shot and killed by that officer.
"It's terrible. We don't want things to end this way. We also don't want people carjacked," said IMPD Chief Chris Bailey on Tuesday.
After the shooting police recovered two guns, including one with a machine gun conversion device.
Several suspects sped away from the scene, but with the help of license plate readers, detectives quickly located the suspect's vehicle in the 300 block of North Shortridge Road.
Detectives observed several individuals believed to be involved in the carjacking get into two separate vehicles and begin to drive away.
Police then conducted a traffic stop on East 10th Street and arrested 20-year-old Joseph Dauda.
According to the affidavit in the case, Dauda admitted to being the getaway driver and was arrested for armed robbery.
During a second traffic stop on north Shadeland police also arrested 20-year-old Damoni Armstrong and a 17-year-old on drug and weapons charges.
During that traffic stop court records show that the officer found a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, and, in plain view, detectives could see a rifle on the floorboard. A further search of the vehicle produced approximately 15 grams of marijuana and a handgun magazine.
The carjacking victim just wishes the whole thing hadn't happened.
"It's like it's sad from both sides. I don't know who his family is and I don't want them to feel like this is all my fault. I was on my way to work," said the victim. "The way I look at it, it could have been me you know,"
In addition to the three arrests, a fourth person was detained for questioning before being released without charges.
The officer involved in the shooting remains on leave while the case is investigated.
