BEECH GROVE, Ind. — Police are investigating after a man was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Beech Grove Saturday night.
According to a press release, Beech Grove Police Department officers responded to the 1600 block of South 9th Street around 9:40 p.m. on a report of a "hit-and-run person-struck" crash. When police arrived at the scene, they located an adult man with trauma.
Law enforcement indicated that the man was transported to a local hospital before he was ultimately pronounced dead.
On Monday, officials with the Marion County Coroner's Office identified the person who died as 47-year-old Shannon Scott Daugherty.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's fatal crash detectives are also investigating the incident. Investigators are asking for citizens to be on the lookout for a black, four-door Volvo that was believed to be involved in the crash.
Police said the Volvo may have been damaged in the hit-and-run.
A public police report indicates a female suspect was involved in the incident.
“The frustrating piece comes from hitting someone and thinking it's okay to just leave. That is not right," said IMPD Sgt. Anthony Patterson.
Neighbors claim speeding along 9th Street is an ongoing issue despite the 30 mph speed limit.
“I think it has gotten worse. People don't pay attention," said Tammy Cathcart, who lives less than 50 feet away from where Daugherty was struck and killed.
Cathcart ended up being one of the last people to see Daugherty alive, saying she ran up and prayed with the man in the middle of the street while waiting for help to arrive.
“I was like you are going to be okay. It’s going to be okay. I just wanted someone to talk to him to let him know that we were there," Cathcart said.
Both Cathcart and IMPD had strong words for the driver who fled the scene after striking Daugherty and leaving him to die in the street.
“There is no way that you didn't know you hit someone. There is just no way," Cathcart said. "If it was an accident... you could've stayed and gotten him the help he needed and maybe he could've made it."
Sgt. Patterson echoed the statement, calling on the suspect to do the right thing by coming forward.
“For God's sake, if you hit someone - Do the right thing. Stop. Pull over and dial 911," Patterson said.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call IMPD or Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS.
