GRANT COUNTY, Ind. -- Police in Grant County are searching for a man and a woman wanted for neglect of a dependent and several other felony charges.
The Grant County Sheriff's Office is seeking the public's assistance in locating Haley Davenport, 27, and Reakwon Simmons, 27, for the following preliminary charges:
- Neglect of dependent resulting in catastrophic injury (level 1 felony)
- Neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury (level 3 felony)

GCSO said Davenport is also wanted for domestic battery resulting in serious bodily injury to a person less than 14 years old, which is a level 3 felony.
According to court documents, an investigation was launched on Oct. 7, 2023, when officers with the Marion Police Department were dispatched to a residence located on the 2100 block of S. Washington Street. This run was in response to reports of possible child abuse.
Once an officer arrived, they met with a representative from the Indiana Department of Child Services. Once there, the officer and DCS worker spoke with an individual who shared their concerns that a 3-year-old in their care was allegedly being abused after observing multiple scars and welts on the child's body.
The injuries were reportedly visible all over the child's arms, stomach, back and chest. At that time, court documents state that the responding officer observed that some of the scars on the victim's right arm appeared to be the result of a "whipping" from a thin cord-like object. Authorities also found that the child was missing an upper front tooth.
The individual also shared with police that they reportedly noticed that the victim would "hobble" when attempting to walk. The extent of the injuries was so extreme that officers decided the victim should be transported to Riley Children's Hospital for a more thorough analysis.
Detectives proceeded to speak with Davenport who informed them that Reakwon Simmons and her were the only people who take of the victim.
Davenport allegedly told police during the interview that the victim had a habit of falling quite often and one of these falls recently made her lose a tooth, court documents said.
Davenport went on to state that the victim would often experience seizures, which would cause her to fall and develop bruising and scars. Davenport also allegedly recalled how she brought the victim to the hospital on Sept. 27, 2023, to receive a checkup after a "seizure."
Hospital staff later contradicted that claim, stating how Davenport never raised any concerns about the child's potential seizures.
The officer also noted that Davenport appeared to "show little to no emotion or care" for the condition of the victim, according to court documents.
Davenport stated that Simmons would allegedly watch the victim while she was at work. Throughout the police interview, Davenport said she allegedly asked Simmons about the reported injuries but that he denied being responsible. She also went on to state that no one at the hospital brought up the injuries so she "didn't think it was that important."
Davenport continued stating that the injuries were not caused by Simmons and could have only been the result of falling, court documents said.
Police then spoke with Simmons, who admitted that the injuries could not have been the result of a fall. He allegedly denied that he was responsible for the injuries, instead telling police that Davenport must have been the person behind it.
Simmons recalled allegedly hearing Davenport yell at the victim in the past and claimed he was the one who urged Davenport to bring the victim to the hospital after one of their alleged seizures.
However, he told police he never questioned what caused the injuries and did not seek medical attention for them. Court documents state that Simmons hinted that he knew more about the exact cause of the injuries but declined to share more because he was not a "snitch."
A few days later, court documents show that a DCS worker informed Marion police that Davenport allegedly admitted that she was responsible for causing the injuries by using a belt.
Davenport admitted that these incidents occurred after she lost her temper on separate occasions around the beginning of September. Davenport went on to claim that she and Simmons discussed the incidents and that he allegedly advised using her hand instead of a belt.
Davenport said she never struck the victim on the head and that the "seizures" only began after these incidents.
Court documents said doctors performed a full examination of the victim and determined they were suffering from "chronic subdural hematomas, retinal hemorrhages, an occipital fracture
and an element of cortical atrophy."
Doctors also said that none of the injuries could have been the result of a fall, but "rather they were inflicted on her by another person and are consistent with child abuse."
Court documents revealed that an exam conducted by an ophthalmologist also determined that the victim suffered a retinal hemorrhage, visible scar tissue and nerve damage that is projected to cause long-term vision issues for the victim. The victim was placed in a visually impaired preschool program.
Court documents show that the state has filed for a No Contact Order. Davenport and Simmons each have a cash-only bond worth $150,000.
Police urged members of the public to avoid approaching either individual if they come into contact. Instead, citizens are urged to contact GCSO at (765) 662-9836.
