INDIANAPOLIS – Indy-area drivers can soon breathe a sigh of relief—southbound I-465 will reopen soon along the southeast corridor.

The stretch between I-70 and I-65 has been closed since May 31 as the Indiana Department of Transportation worked on pavement restoration, bridge deck patching and joint repair work.

The agency allotted 21 days for the project and planned to get as much done as it could over those three weeks.

INDOT said 465 southbound and its respective ramps will reopen sometime between late Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday.

"We start with restriping all of the lanes to get them back to their original configuration," INDOT posted on social media Friday. "This is a long process--expect the lanes to steadily reopen."

Even then, drivers will encounter a two-lane closure between 46th Street and I-70 as crews do some restriping work.

According to INDOT, the entire corridor “will look normal” by 6 a.m. on Monday.

The agency opted for the three-week closure instead of a series of prolonged localized repairs so crews could get the work done quickly without worrying about oncoming traffic.

Drivers will get a break from I-465 construction on that side of town for a little bit. However, starting July 12, the same ramp and lane closures are coming to the northbound lanes.

The project will mirror the southbound one, with a 21-day closure focused on pavement restoration and other much-needed repairs.

On Monday, crews will start placing signs for the northbound closure. INDOT said more information about the northbound work would be released next week.
