VALPARAISO, Ind. — A man is dead after exchanging gunfire with deputies and officers Thursday evening in Valparaiso.
According to Indiana State Police, Valparaiso Police Department and Porter County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to investigate a suspicious person displaying a handgun near the fairgrounds.
When officers arrived, they saw the man near the Butterfield Pavilion and then he ran towards Calumet Avenue, Sgt. Glen Fifield said in a news release.
As the man ran, he shot at officers and deputies and they returned fire, Fifield said. The man was shot, was taken to Northwest Health Hospital and later died.
The Porter County Coroner's Office identified the deceased man as 20-year-old Caden Mura of Valparaiso. The cause and manner of death are pending autopsy and toxicology results, which will be released at a later time.
Indiana State Police detectives are still investigating.
