INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers arrested a man after an hours-long standoff on Saturday.

Police indicated that they responded to 3100 block of Brickenwood Lane around 7:30 p.m. on a report of a domestic disturbance. As their investigation unfolded, officers were told a man had battered one of his family members.

IMPD reported that its officers made contact with one of the man's family members. Police indicated the individual appeared to have been battered.

Officers were also led to believe the alleged battery happened in front of children. Eventually, police attempted to make contact with the man while he was barricaded in a house.

Law enforcement was also informed that there was likely a weapon inside the residence the man was in.

As the incident continued, police learned the man was wanted on two previous felony warrants and a misdemeanor warrant. According to IMPD, the charges tied to the felony warrants were criminal recklessness with a firearm and pointing a firearm.

The misdemeanor charge the man faces was carrying a handgun without a license.

Police at the scene ultimately requested assistance from a special weapons and tactics (SWAT) team. Negotiators were also called to the scene, per IMPD.

Police reported that, during the incident, officers learned the man was hearing impaired. Police then tried to contact the man via text for more than half an hour.

The man did not respond to police's attempts to reach him, so officers forced entry into the residence. IMPD reported that the man was apprehended after police entered the home at approximately 10:20 p.m.

As a precautionary measure, the man was transported to Eskenazi Hospital for a medical checkout. Police indicated that the man they arrested was wheelchair-bound.

"On these situations, we never want to rush," IMPD Night Watch Captain Don Weilhammer said at the scene. "We always want to take as much time as we can, within reason. To be honest, we were just concerned about his welfare and whether or not he was still OK.

"Since we had no communication with him whatsoever, the decision was made to go ahead to go inside the residence. They did locate him, and he was conscious. He was transported to the hospital just out of caution to make sure he is OK."

Police did not name the man during a media briefing that was held after the incident.

As of this article's publication, no additional information on the standoff had been made available.
