INDIANAPOLIS — Indy police are investigating after two people were shot within 10 minutes of each other on the city's near north side. IMPD said several streets are closed as a result.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department crews were called just before 5 p.m. Wednesday to the intersection of 29th Street and Central Avenue for a person shot. Upon arrival, officers found a victim in critical condition suffering from gunshot wounds.
IMPD crews then received a call around 5:05 p.m. to the intersection of 27th Street and N. Meridian Street, also on the near north side, for another person shot. There, officers found a victim with a gunshot wound. That person is in stable condition, police said.
"Preliminarily, detectives believe the incident involved an exchange of gunfire between the two individuals who were shot," IMPD Lt. Shane Foley said. "It is not clear if they were in the vehicles or out of the vehicles they were driving at the time of the shooting. Detectives do not believe any other individuals were involved in the incident and they are not looking for anyone. Detectives also believe there were no third parties injured as a result of the incident."
Lt. Foley added that no other vehicles were struck by gunfire but that there was a possible third car that was hit by one the two involved in the gunfire.
As a result, traffic on Central was closed between 28th and 29th streets and Meridian was closed from Fall Creek to 28th Street.
"Detectives are working to determine what led up to the incident," Foley said. "This remains an active investigation."
