JACKSON COUNTY, Ind. — A former Jackson County Auditor was arrested by Indiana State Police on Friday.

According to a press release, 44-year-old Staci Eglen of Seymour now faces numerous charges related to fraud, official misconduct and theft. Her arrest comes on the heels of a month-long investigation Indiana State Police conducted.

ISP's investigation began when the State Board of Accounts discovered potentially fraudulent activity Eglen had been conducting.

During their investigation, state police determined Eglen had altered at least two checks that were issued to her by the Jackson County Treasurer's Office. Eglen was supposed to use the checks for work purposes as an employee of the Hamilton Township Trustee's Office.

ISP reported that Eglen deposited the checks into her personal bank account, received cash for them and then made personal purchases with the money. Police believe Eglen illegally obtained more than $18,000 from the county.

Per a release, Eglen has been preliminarily charged with four counts of official misconduct, four counts of theft and two counts of fraud.

All of the charges Eglen faces are Level 6 Felonies. The maximum penalty for a Level 6 Felony in Indiana is a 2.5-year prison sentence and a fine of up to $10,000.

ISP indicated that Eglen resigned from her position as Jackson County Auditor shortly after state officials began looking into her fraudulent activity. She was incarcerated at the Jackson County Jail after police arrested her.

According to the Jackson County Jail log, Eglen's bond was set at $1,505.
