INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis metro police shot an armed suspect Thursday on the city's west side after he reportedly fired shots at officers.
IMPD was called around 3:30 p.m. Thursday to the 900 block of S. Kiel Avenue - just north of Washington Street inside the 465 loop - after multiple reports of shots being fired at Cloverleaf Apartments. IMPD Sgt. William Young said 911 callers gave a description of the suspect, stating he was armed.
Another witness then told responding officers the suspect was still in the apartment complex. Young said that once IMPD officers came into contact with the suspect, they ordered him to drop his weapon and comply with orders. Instead, the suspect reportedly ran for several blocks on foot.
As the suspect ran toward the 1000 block of Waldemere Avenue, he reportedly fired shots at a fully-marked IMPD squad car. One of these shots struck the front bumper of the IMPD vehicle. One IMPD officer who was chasing the suspect on foot then returned fire, striking the suspect with a graze wound to the neck. No officers or uninvolved citizens were injured.

Officers then reportedly rendered aid to the suspect and took him into custody. FOX59/CBS4 crews on scene saw a man being handcuffed to a stretcher before being taken away. Young said the suspect was taken to a local hospital in stable condition and that he is awake and breathing.
Young said that IMPD does not believe there is any other threat to the community. While investigating, officers reportedly found a gun near the suspect.

A preliminary investigation into the shooting shows that, prior to officers arriving, the suspect was involved in some type of disturbance with some family members at a nearby apartment complex. After this disturbance, the suspect allegedly fired several shots in the parking lot and pointed the gun at several family members.
IMPD Chief Chris Bailey said Thursday night that the suspect is expected to make a full recovery and that he will be preliminarily charged after being released from the hospital. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will then make official charging decisions.
Chief Bailey said the IMPD officer who fired their department-issued weapon has been placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting. Several other officers involved are receiving mental health treatment, Bailey said.
