INDIANAPOLIS – A suspect faces multiple charges in connection with a May shooting that left a juvenile in critical condition.
This week, the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office charged Miguel Pugh with robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, armed robbery, aggravated battery and criminal recklessness, all felonies. He also faces a misdemeanor count of dangerous possession of a firearm.
The charges stem from a May 22, 2024, shooting inside a gas station on the near east side. Police were dispatched around 6:30 p.m. to the 2900 block of East 10th Street for a reported shooting and found a teenager suffering from gunshot wounds.
In court documents, witnesses described a chaotic scene that included yelling, gunshots, people running in and out of the gas station, some hiding for their own safety and vehicles speeding away.
Investigators pieced together the events by talking to witnesses and reviewing security footage from the gas station, city surveillance cameras and a private residence.
A group went into the gas station to buy something. One of them also had some marijuana on them. When asked for ID, a woman left the store and came back.
At that point, a fight broke out between two of the women in the group. It soon grew to involve other members of the group. One of the women said she had a gun in her pocket and others were trying to take it from her.
She fired her gun in self-defense, she told investigators. Pugh was among the group. He returned fire and hit another teen, leaving him in critical condition, according to investigators. All involved parties then ran out of the gas station.
Investigators said Pugh denied any involvement in the shooting during a June 20 interview. His sister watched surveillance footage from the gas station, however, and told police the person in the video was, without question, Pugh.
Tracking data from Pugh’s phone also showed he was at the gas station between 6:24 p.m. and 6:31 p.m. on the day of the incident, according to court documents. The times coincided with the shooting.
Near the shooting scene, police recovered a Glock with a machine gun conversion device and an extended magazine that belonged to the juvenile who’d been shot. They also found a head covering in a nearby alley that police believe Pugh wore during the incident.
According to court records, Pugh took a plea deal in October in an unrelated case involving drugs and a firearm.
An initial hearing was scheduled for Friday.
