INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Metropolitan police are investigating the unusual circumstances of an early morning shooting on the near southeast side.

Officers were dispatched around 1:20 a.m. Friday to the area near South Randolph Street and Prospect Street for a shots fired call.

They didn’t find a victim, although they eventually encountered a man who said he’d been attacked and people were trying to steal his shoes. Police found shoes at the scene and a large amount of cash.

They didn’t immediately realize he’d been shot.

“Not until the adult male was loaded into the medic did the medic officer discover that he had actually been shot, or according to the medics had wounds consistent with the gunshot wounds,” said Capt. Don Weilhammer with IMPD.

The man was taken to Eskenazi Hospital. Weilhammer said the shooting appeared to be targeted. He acknowledged the circumstances were atypical.

“We do believe this was a targeted attack on this individual. According to him he was just out walking on the street although his car was actually here on the scene too, and he does not live here,” he said. “So there are somethings that are a little unusual about this situation along with the fact the shoes were left here and also a large amount of cash.”

Anyone with information should contact Det. Joshua Taylor at (317) 327-3475 or Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS (8477).
