INDIANAPOLIS — Indy metro police were on the hunt for a stolen vehicle that had two babies inside. The babies ended up being left outside in the cold but were spotted by a Good Samaritan who took the infants inside and called police.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department confirmed late Monday morning that officers were called to the 1800 block of Gimber Street on report of a possible kidnapping shortly before 11 a.m.
Police said a vehicle was reported stolen and officers were told two baby girls were in the vehicle at the time of the theft. The girls are only four and five months old, police said.
Police quickly released the following photograph of the stolen vehicle, identified as a silver 2013 Hyundai Sonata.
Shortly before noon, officers located the stolen vehicle. The babies were not inside and the suspect was gone.
Police then received a 911 call from a Good Samaritan who spotted the babies left outside in the cold in the 1300 block of S. Riley Street. The resident took the children into their home and out of the cold and called 911.
Police said the babies are safe and being checked by medical professionals. IMPD is unsure how long the babies were left in the cold.
A suspect has not been identified at this time as police continue to investigate the car theft.
Anyone with information is asked to contact IMPD or call Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS.
