FISHERS, Ind. -- Fishers police have arrested a man and woman accused of stealing a vehicle and using hundreds of fraudulent checks.
Officers with the Fishers Police Department were dispatched on Nov. 13 to check on the welfare of three inhabitants inside a vehicle near I-69 and Campus Parkway. FPD said officers arrived and found three individuals who were reportedly asleep inside the vehicle.
All three suspects, including David Davis of Avon and Jessica Sprankle of Indianapolis, were detained and questioned, FPD said.
FPD said detectives later determined the vehicle was reported as being stolen and had a license plate from Indianapolis.
While searching the stolen vehicle, FPD said officers recovered gift cards, credit cards and hundreds of checks that appeared to be "washed," meaning they had been tampered with. FPD said officers also located blank checks from various businesses.
Detectives went on to find dozens of victims after determining that Davis was responsible for the alleged theft of various checks from mailboxes.
Davis was transported to the Hamilton County Jail where he was preliminarily charged with the following offences:
- Auto theft (level 6 felony)
- Counterfeiting (level 6 felony)
- Forgery (level 6 felony)
- Theft (level 6 felony)
- Theft (Class A misdemeanor)
- Unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle (Class B misdemeanor)
- Possession of marijuana (Class B misdemeanor)
- Possession of marijuana (Class A misdemeanor)
Sprankle is also facing the following preliminary charges:
- Possession of methamphetamine (level 6 felony)
- Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person (Class A misdemeanor)
- Driving while suspended (Class A misdemeanor)
- Possession of marijuana (Class B misdemeanor)
- Unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle (Class B misdemeanor)
"Through the diligent efforts of our officers during this welfare check, we may have prevented numerous individuals and businesses from falling victim to fraud. The action not only apprehended the suspects but also dismantled a scheme that could have caused significant harm to our community. Our commitment to public safety remains our top priority," Fishers Police Chief Ed Gebhart said.
