PLAINFIELD, Ind. — An inmate's death from July 4 has been ruled a homicide by the Hendrick's County Coroner's Office.

According to a coroner's report, 60-year-old Jeffrey Clouser was found dead in his cell at the Plainfield Correctional Facility on July 4 at approximately noon. No life-saving measures were attempted due to "obvious death," the report indicates.

At the time, the Indiana Department of Corrections didn't elaborate on the death other than confirming that an inmate had been found unresponsive by staff. It was labeled a death investigation.

A coroner's report reveals the death has since been ruled a homicide after an autopsy was conducted on Clouser. According to the autopsy, Clouser died from blunt force trauma to the head.

"Initial investigation indicates the decedent was an inmate assaulted by another inmate," the coroner's report concluded.

Prison records show that Clouser was in custody after being charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction, a Level 6 felony. He had no alcohol in his system at the time of his death.

FOX59/CBS4 has reached back out to IDOC for further comment on the investigation.
