MONROE COUNTY, Ind. — A large brush fire burned through several acres at the North Folk State Wildlife Refuge Wednesday night.
Firefighters with the Monroe Fire Protection District were called around 5:24 p.m. near E. Concord Drive off E. State Road 46 after a resident reported seeing fire in the area.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, an Indiana DNR property manager informed them that the fire was actually near E. Rogers Road near the North Fork Wildlife Refuge.
Monroe Fire Protection District said crews reported seeing a fire "rapidly progressing" up a hill in a heavily wooded stretch of land.
The flames were kept between two gravel roads, which helped the firefighters contain it despite the presence of high winds.
The fire went on to burn through 15-17 acres before it was eventually brought under control. A total of 25 firefighters, including six first responders with the DNR, responded to the call.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
