Update: IMPD detectives arrested a 16-year-old on Tuesday evening on murder charges for his alleged role in the shooting.
INDIANAPOLIS — Police have detained a person of interest after one person was shot and killed on Indy's north side Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting occurred around 2:20 p.m. near the intersection of 79th Street and Harcourt Road.
Officers reported arriving and finding a person suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers attempted to render aid to the victim but police said the individual succumbed to his injuries and died.
Police believe the deceased victim is an adult male.
According to IMPD, officers received word that the suspect was still in the area leading to SWAT being called out to the scene to assist.
IMPD confirmed shortly after 4:30 p.m. that officers had detained a person of interest and urged the public to avoid the area as the investigation continues.
Police advise citizens who live in the area to remain in place and report any suspicious persons by calling 911.
There was a large police presence in the area of 79th and Harcourt as officers and members of the SWAT team arrived to canvass the area for the shooting suspect.
FOX59/CBS4 crews reported arriving on scene and spotting the deceased victim lying in the street.
At this time, no further information has been released as the investigation remains active and ongoing.
