Severe weather hits central Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS -- Central Indiana experienced severe weather Tuesday with Tornado and Severe Thunderstorm Warnings issued for several counties.

The National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning for southeastern Howard County and northern Tipton County until 6:30 p.m. Grant County is also under a Tornado Warning until 7 p.m.

NWS confirmed that its radars have detected signs of a possible rotation and urged local residents to shelter in place to avoid being struck by flying debris. The warning concluded by adding that mobile homes would be damaged or completely destroyed by the intense gusts and did not rule out damage to roofs, windows and vehicles.

A portion of Indiana is also currently under a tornado watch, according to the Indianapolis office of the National Weather Service.

A tornado watch was issued by the office at around 2:30 p.m. for portions of Indiana, as well as Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin until 9 p.m. The cities in Indiana that are under the watch include:

  • Indianapolis
  • Lafayette
  • Terre Haute
  • South Bend

Other cities under the watch include Chicago, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Kalamazoo, Michigan and Springfield, Illinois.

According to the office, a few tornados are "likely" under the watch and areas could see scattered hail up to tennis ball size. Scattered gusts of wind up to 70 mph is also possible under the watch.

According to previous reports, large hail and damaging winds are expected to be the main threat for the Indianapolis area.
