INDIANAPOLIS — Indy police officers shot and killed an armed suspect Thursday afternoon on the city's north side after he reportedly threatened to shoot neighbors in the area.
According to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Chief Chris Bailey, IMPD North District officers were called just after 2 p.m. to the 600 block of 38th Street on the city's north side for a person armed with a weapon.
While en route, officers were told that the run was upgraded to a person pointing a gun and threatening to shoot other people in the area. One caller in the 3900 block of Broadway Street said the suspect, who she did not know, was on her porch and pointing a gun at her head.
Upon arrival, Bailey said IMPD officers made contact with the suspect on the porch of a house on Broadway Street. Then, an eyewitness in the area told officers that the suspect was pointing the gun at them.
This caused two IMPD officers to turn toward the suspect and fire their service weapons, Bailey said. Both officers were equipped with body cams at the time of the shooting and Bailey said "at least one" of the officers had their camera turned on during the incident.
The suspect, who police identified as an adult male, was treated on scene by IEMS crews before being taken to an Indy hospital in critical condition. He was later pronounced deceased, Bailey confirmed in a news conference around 6 p.m.
Chief Bailey said that no officers or uninvolved citizens were injured in the shooting. He added that a firearm was found on the steps of the porch where the suspect was shot.
Both of the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on immediate administrative leave, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings. The incident will be reviewed by several different groups, including IMPD Internal Affairs and a citizen-review board.
The name of the deceased suspect is not being released at this time. The Marion County Coroner's Office will soon conduct an autopsy and release the man's name, Bailey said.
According to IMPD, Broadway Street between 38th and 40th streets will be shut down for a significant time. People arriving home in the area should expect a heavy police presence into the night, Bailey said. Detectives are now following up on why the suspect was in the area to start.
The shooting comes just one day after a police officer shot and killed a man during a Wednesday morning incident in Beech Grove. The man reportedly sliced an officer's face during a child custody dispute. For more information on this incident, click here.
