INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts’ pursuit for veteran depth at running back has included working out Leonard Fournette.
The team put Fournette through a workout along with roughly a half-dozen other players, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
The Colts’ running game revolves around 2021 NFL rushing champion Jonathan Taylor, but there’s uncertainty behind him. Trey Sermon has missed extended time with a hamstring injury. The No. 3 running back is Tyler Goodson, who rushed 13 times for 87 yards with the Colts last season.
Fournette, 29, possesses a deep resume, although he appeared in just two games with Buffalo and spent time on the Bills’ practice squad last season.
The No. 4 overall pick of Jacksonville in the 2017 draft has posted a pair of 1,000-yard seasons, both with the Jaguars – 1,040 as a rookie and 1,152 in ’19.
In 2020, Fournette was an integral part as the Tom Brady-led Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV. The 6-0, 228-pounder was the Bucs’ leading rusher (64 carries, 300 yards, three touchdowns) and added a team-high 18 receptions for 148 yards and another TD.
Fournette was Tampa Bay’s leading rusher in ’22 (668 yards) and ’21 (812).
He’s averaged 3.9 yards for his career and has 34 rushing TDs in 81 games.
