RICHMOND, Ind. -- Two individuals, including a 17-year-old juvenile, were injured after a crash involving a moped on Tuesday evening in Richmond.

According to a news release from the Richmond Police Department, officers responded to a serious crash at the intersection of US 40 East and North 22nd Street at around 9:07 p.m. on Tuesday.

The collision involved a red 2004 Toyota Corolla, driven by a 25-year-old, and a red 2021 Kymco Agility moped, driven by a 17-year-old. The release said both drivers were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

The 17-year-old was later airlifted to another hospital because of the "severity of his neck and back injuries." Officials determined that the juvenile was not wearing a helmet during the crash.

Preliminary findings during the investigation into the incident indicate the Toyota was traveling westbound on US 40 in the left lane, approaching the intersection at North 22nd Street. The moped was traveling eastbound on US 40 and was in the left turn lane at the intersection. When the moped turned northbound onto North 22nd Street, it collided with the Toyota.

Officials said the incident continues to be under investigation.
