INDIANAPOLIS -- A man died after being found shot outside a business on Indy's near northwest side Wednesday night.
Police said Thursday morning that they'd made at least one arrest in connection with the case.
Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched around 8:53 p.m. to the 2600 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street near 26th Street after receiving reports of a possible shooting.
According to IMPD's online reporting system, officers were initially called to respond to a vandalism incident before the run type was upgraded to a person shot.
IMPD said officers arrived and found an adult male suffering from at least one gunshot wound outside a business in the area. The victim was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, where he later died.
The Marion County Coroner's Office identified him as 56-year-old George Barnett Nelson Sr.
IMPD said that while Nelson was found outside the business, it remained unclear where the shooting originally took place.
"Well, they located the victim suffering from the gunshot wounds outside the business," said Capt. Rob Rider with IMPD. "As far as where it happened, that’s still being investigated but that’s where he was located."
Detectives canvassed for additional evidence and reviewed surveillance footage of nearby businesses.
"[Cameras are] definitely going to be looked at by investigators. I’m not sure if that captured anything. I’m sure that our detectives will look into it to see if it captured any footage of the incident," Rider said.
IMPD later said information gathered by investigators, including tips from the community, led them to a suspect and the description of a vehicle.
Just after 11:50 p.m. Wednesday, East District officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of N. Bancroft St. in response to a shots fired call. They located a vehicle matching the description of the one spotted near the earlier homicide scene and detained three people.
After obtaining a search warrant, officers recovered two firearms from the vehicle. They arrested one of the individuals in connection with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street homicide, police said. Police didn't provide additional information about the suspect or indicate if additional arrests were forthcoming.
The shooting remains under investigation.
