INDIANAPOLIS -- A local businessman is dead following a shooting outside his restaurant at 26th and MLK.
Investigators believe the deadly shooting at Pa and Ma's Backyard BBQ stemmed from a dispute over money.
The shooting took place around 9 p.m. Wednesday.
"I'm gonna miss him. My heart hurts. I'm never gonna be the same," said the victim's daughter Brockelle Nelson.
Nelson's dad, 56-year-old George Nelson Sr., who was often called Big George, is remembered as someone who always tried to help those in need.
"He was really about hiring people in this community, helping kids and being something positive," said Brockelle Nelson.
Just three hours after the shooting, police located the accused killer, 38-year-old Justin Jones, following a shots fired call on the east side. Jones has been arrested in relation to the homicide.
According to a release by IMPD, through the work of district officers, homicide detectives, and the cooperation of community members, suspect information was acquired, as well as the description of the suspect vehicle.
IMPD also explained east district officers were dispatched on a report of shots fired in the 2000 block of N Bancroft St. When officers arrived, they located the suspect vehicle from the earlier 2600 block of Dr. MLK Jr St homicide, along with three occupants. The three adult male occupants were detained. A search warrant was applied for and granted, resulting in the recovery of two firearms from within the suspect vehicle.
IMPD believes Nelson hired Jones to do some work on the business.
That work had not been completed and led to an argument over payment.
"He was going to get half the payment and when he finished he was going to get the other half. Well the guy wanted all the money upfront," said Brockelle Nelson.
"You get into a dispute over money and you kill someone? This is just nuts," said Rev. Charles Harrison.
While Nelson had run Pa and Ma's Backyard BBQ for years, he only recently opened the location on MLK.
Harrison, whose church is just blocks away, said the area has long struggled to attract new businesses because of the high crime rate. He is saddened by the senseless killing.
"He was committed to helping revitalize the business by bringing his business here. He was known for trying to help people in the neighborhood," said Harrison.
"It's not just my father. This suspect hurt an entire community," said Brockelle Nelson. "Have a conversation. Have a disagreement, but you ain't got to kill somebody. It's never that deep."
The suspect is being held without bond pending the filing of formal charges.
