INDIANAPOLIS – A shots fired call led to a homicide investigation early Tuesday morning on the near northwest side of Indianapolis.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers received a call about shots fired in the 600 block of Udell Street around 3:30 a.m.

Upon arrival, officers encountered a crime scene. They were soon notified that a man had been shot in a nearby home. Police found the victim suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Drew Brown, a public information officer for IMPD, said homicide detectives arrived to interview witnesses and process the scene.

“At this time, detectives believe that two residences are involved in this incident, between the shots fired and the person shot,” Brown said.

Forensic units also responded, as did the chaplain unit.

“Our detectives are going to work diligently to try to determine the circumstances that led up to this,” Brown said. “If, in fact, probable cause is developed at some point throughout the investigation, the prosecutor’s office will ultimately make the final charging decisions. They will be hard at work trying to identify the person or persons involved in this incident.”

Brown didn’t believe there was an active threat to the community. He didn’t reveal information about a motive or possible suspect. The shooting remains under investigation.

“Indianapolis is waking up to violence again this morning,” Brown said. “And it’s heartbreaking to us.”
