INDIANAPOLIS -- A man was arrested earlier this month after police reported that he had a weapon on him on the east side of Indianapolis, even though he was prohibited to own or possess a firearm.

According to a post on IMPD's social media page, 36-year-old Thomas Quinn Jr. was arrested on preliminary charges of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, possession of methamphetamine and possession of paraphernalia.

On Thursday, IMPD detectives who were working an investigation reportedly saw Quinn with what they believed was a firearm in his waistband near a home in the 1900 block of East 52nd St. The post read that Quinn was known to the detectives as a serious violent felon, a person who is prohibited from having a firearm.

After Quinn reportedly left the scene, detectives pulled Quinn's vehicle over near the 3100 block of North Emerson Avenue. Quinn, as well as the passenger in the vehicle, were detained. The post read that Quinn reportedly admitted to detectives that the firearm was in his bedroom at his home.

During a search of Quinn's home, as well as Quinn's vehicle, detectives reportedly discovered suspected methamphetamine, as well as two syringes containing what detectives believed to be heroin. The firearm was also located in Quinn's bedroom.

The other person who was detained during the traffic stop was released pending further investigation, the post read.
