The top 10 brands imitated by scammers

Since impersonation schemes are the most common form of scams, it’s always smart to keep track of the companies and brands being used by criminals in their attempts to steal from victims.

The cyber security watchdogs at Guardio Security recently compiled a list of the top 10 brands imitated by bad buys in the second quarter of 2024:

  • Meta (8.1%)
  • Microsoft (7.8%)
  • Steam (6.7%)
  • USPS (6.3%)
  • AT&T (3.9%)
  • Roblox (3.2%)
  • Telegram (2.2%)
  • OneDrive (2.2%)
  • DHL (1.9%)
  • Uniswap (1.9%)

In addition to compiling the list, Guardio provided details on the scams using the top 4 names on the list.

For example, scammers imitating Meta often use fake login pages or notifications about your account as a way to lure you into logging in on a fake page they built. The fake pages are designed to steal your account information and get access.

Fake Microsoft scams often do the same thing, but they use bogus security alerts and Office 365 login pages.

Steam users are often targeted through bogus giveaways with links sent through chat messages. The messages are geared toward gamers who use the platform.

And as we’ve reported within the last week, U.S. Postal Service scams often involve fake alerts about delivery problems that don’t exist. Those are often a way to get you onto a fake website to enter your personal information.

According to Guardio and other security experts, you should never take an email or text from a company at face value, especially if it’s unsolicited.  Instead of clicking on a link in a message, it’s best to go to the company’s website on your own and start looking into the issue.
