COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Department of Natural Resources confirmed crews recovered a body from Grandview Lake in Columbus.
A firefighter spotted the body around 5 a.m.; crews then made the recovery. The body was that of Richard Chaille, who disappeared on Wednesday. His family has been notified.
Teams began searching the lake Wednesday after Chaille went underwater and didn't resurface.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department were among responding agencies.
DNR originally said Chaille was believed to be waterskiing before going underwater at approximately 11:15 a.m. DNR later learned he wasn't waterskiing but instead was floating with his feet on the back of a deck boat before going under.
He was not wearing a lifejacket, DNR said.
As of 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, the victim still hadn't resurfaced. DNR said conservation officers utilized boats and side-scan sonar in their search efforts.
Around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, crews suspended the search due to rain and lightning. They resumed their search at night and returned to the lake on Thursday morning.
