DELPHI, Ind. — A young child was airlifted to a hospital with severe facial burns after a firework accident in rural Delphi on the Fourth of July.

According to the Carroll County Sheriff's Department, 911 dispatchers were called about the firework accident at approximately 2:41 p.m. with EMS, the Delphi Fire Department and county deputies being sent to a home just outside Sleeth in rural Delphi.

The parent of the young boy told authorities that a firework had exploded in the child's face. The child reportedly was a "good distance away" from the explosion when it ignited, according to the parents, but a portion of the firework flew at the child.

No one else was injured.

Due to the severe facial injury inflicted on the young boy, first responders called for a medical helicopter which landed near 975 West and 700 North.
