LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A juvenile victim is recovering in the hospital after being stabbed in downtown Lafayette, police confirmed Thursday.

Officers with the Lafayette Police Department were called around 1:35 p.m. on Thursday to the 300 block of N. 3rd Street in reference to a stabbing.

Upon arrival, LPD said officers found a juvenile victim suffering from a stab wound. That juvenile has been taken to a hospital for treatment and is currently listed in critical condition, police said.

In the course of the investigation, LPD officers detained a 16-year-old juvenile without further incident for their alleged role in the incident. Preliminary information indicates the victim and the suspect knew each other before the incident took place, LPD said.

The 16-year-old suspect has been arrested and preliminarily charged with aggravated battery, battery with a deadly weapon, and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.

LPD confirmed shortly after 9:30 p.m. that the victim remained in critical condition and that the stabbing was being investigated.
