IMPD: 1 dead after near south side shooting

INDIANAPOLIS -- One person is dead after a shooting on the near south side of Indianapolis, according to officials with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Officers with the department's southeast district responded to a person shot in the 2200 block of S. Meridian St. at around 7:06 a.m. on Thursday.

When officers arrived on scene, they located a person with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound inside a home. The person, who was unidentified by police, was pronounced dead on scene.

IMPD officers on scene said that the department's homicide unit, along with the crime lab and the Marion County Coroner's Office, responded to the scene. Officials believe this was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public.

Officials said that detectives have not found the firearm that was reportedly involved in the incident as of Thursday morning. Officials also said there was a vehicle involved, but did not provide any more information.

IMPD said that Meridian Street northbound, around Pleasant Run Parkway, will remain closed as the investigation continues. Meridian Street southbound remains open. If anyone has any information on the incident, they are asked to call the Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317) 262-TIPS.
