INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrested a man for possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon—as well as a warrant for violating his federal probation—on Wednesday on the near northeast side.
According to court documents, IMPD officers were around the 3400 block of N Parker Avenue when they observed a man outside of a residence. Police said he had a handgun clearly visible on his person and identified him as 32-year-old Dawayne Hawkins.
IMPD reported that detectives recognized Hawkins due to a previous incident. They noted that he had an active federal probation violation warrant. Therefore, he could not legally possess any firearms.
IMPD said that after noticing Hawkins enter a residence, detectives applied for and were granted a warrant to enter. There, they found two firearms believed to have been stolen from a robbery this past May. This led to Hawkins being taken into custody after a two-hour standoff. Court documents said the Marion County Prosecutor's Office will make the final decisions regarding his charges.
