INDIANAPOLIS — Part of English Avenue in Indianapolis will be closed for more than a month to allow Citizens Energy Group crews to work on the DigIndy Tunnel System.
According to a press release, beginning on or after Monday, construction performed by Citizens Energy Group contractors will require a full closure of English Avenue near its intersection with Sherman Drive.
Crews also expect English Avenue to be closed at its intersection with Denny Street until September.
Citizens Energy Group reported that signs will be installed to detour eastbound and westbound traffic around the English Avenue construction. The detours will involve East Washington Street, South Sherman Drive and Emerson Avenue.
Local vehicle traffic will be allowed to pass through the area during construction.
Per Citizens Energy Group, the DigIndy Tunnel System is a 28-mile network of 18-foot deep rock tunnels that are being built 250 feet beneath the city. The system will help the City of Indianapolis make advancements to its sewer system and wastewater treatment plants.
The project is part of a larger $2 billion program to help reduce sewer overflows into area waterways and help the City of Indianapolis comply with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards.
The DigIndy Tunnel System has been in the works for more than a decade, and the project is expected to be completed by 2025.
Citizens Energy Group is encouraging those who may be traveling near English Avenue to comply with posted signage and drive carefully by active construction zones.
