Saturday will act as the last somewhat comfortable day for quite some time across Central Indiana. This is because our upcoming hot dome will start to be felt around here starting Sunday for Father's Day and for the days that follow. This will be the warmest air of the season so far and could be the warmest in almost two years for Indianapolis.
The evening calls for comfy temperatures and humidity levels before changes start on Father's Day. Going through the day, temperatures will approach/surpass 90° for the first time this year for many hometowns. Heat index values will approach the mid-90s. This is because increased southwest flow will bring muggy dew points along with it.
With the increased heat and humidity levels, a Knozone Action Day is on tap for Father's Day. The poor air quality will be fueled by the less-than-ideal outdoor conditions with the heat and humidity. For Sunday, this is targeted mainly for groups sensitive to poor air quality. Individuals in this group should remain inside on Sunday as long as possible.
NOTE: Sunday is the first Knozone Action Day of 2024. This comes on the heels of 2023, which had a record-breaking 23 Knozone Action Days for Central Indiana.
Thanks to the hot dome pretty much parking in the NE United States, there will be very little relief from the heat and humidity after Father's Day. It would not surprise me if heat index levels at times approached 100°. Forecast high temperatures will also be near current records for several days.
Please take this heat seriously as it will be ongoing for several days. There are daily rain chances each afternoon due to daytime heating. However, they are small at best. No big-time rains are soon as the dry June continues. Remember, June is Central Indiana's wettest month on average each year. Keep an eye on your lawns as a flash drought can occur over the next week.
The sun is very powerful at this time and will continue taking moisture out of our grounds with very little standing in its way.
