FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -- One officer is in stable condition after being shot when FWPD officers responded to calls of a burglary Thursday afternoon.

FWPD Chief of Police, Scott Caudill, told WANE 15 that officers were called to the 4700 block of Holton Avenue around 4:45 p.m. in response to a burglary.

The resident of the home informed police that they heard a window break and saw two suspects enter the home. They believed the suspects were armed with a gun and a knife.

When officers arrived on the scene they found a broken window near the detached garage. They were then confronted by suspects, one being 20-year-old Zar Ni Myint. Myint discharged his fully automatic handgun and officers returned fire, striking Myint.

The two suspects fled on foot from the scene. One firearm was recovered at the scene.

The officer, who was hit in the gunfire exchange, is being treated at an area hospital. He is in stable condition at this time. The other officer who responded to the scene was not hit in the exchange of gunfire.

The residents of the home were not injured.

FWPD arrested 20-year-old Zar Ni Myint, who was hiding in the 1300 block of Fairfax Avenue. Myint was found with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the abdomen and was taken to a local hospital.

Myint was medically cleared Thursday night and is currently being held at the Allen County Jail on preliminary charges of Attempted Murder, Burglary Causing Serious Bodily Injury, Aggravated Battery, Resisting law Enforcement Drawing a Deadly Weapon and Possession of a Machine Gun.

Chief Caudill told WANE 15 that there is no active threat to the public at this time.

This is an ongoing investigation.
