ONTARIO, Canada — The body of an Indianapolis man reported missing last week while canoeing in Canada has been found in an Ontario lake.
The Ontario Provincial Police confirmed to FOX59/CBS4 that crews had located the body of a missing canoeist around 4 p.m. Sunday in Saganagons Lake. OPP identified the body as a 25-year-old man from Indianapolis who had gone missing on June 5 after his canoe capsized.
While OPP is not releasing the man's name, CTVNews Ontario identified him as 25-year-old Grant Smith of Indianapolis. The news station reported that five people were found alive last week after several canoes flipped over in the waters of Quetico Provincial Park.
"There were three canoes traveling with two individuals in each canoe," OPP spokesperson Autumn Eadie told CTVNews. "Three individuals were wearing lifejackets during this incident. The deceased individual was not."
CTVNews said the park reported "more windy weather" on social media on June 6 and said the water is "still relatively cold." Officials advised visitors to wear a lifejacket and paddle to their skill and comfort level.
A man identifying himself as Smith's father posted Monday morning on Facebook thanking people for support during a tough time.
"First of all, my family and I would like to say thank you to everyone for the outpouring support and prayers. We will continue to need them as we move forward," Tony Smith wrote. "We now begin the process of bringing him home. We asked for your continued support and prayers as we navigate this path."
No other information was immediately provided by OPP regarding Smith's death.
