INDIANAPOLIS - The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a shooting that critically injured a juvenile early Friday morning.

According to IMPD, just before 1 a.m. officers received a call of a possible person shot at a residence in the 900 block of Hamilton Avenue.

When officers arrived, they located a juvenile female with a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to Riley Hospital for Children in critical but stable condition.

Although police believe the shooting occurred inside the residence, they do not have any eyewitness accounts.

“Currently we have no witnesses and according to the ones we’ve talked to, there were numerous people here, but nobody saw anything,” said Capt. Don Weilhammer with IMPD.

“Detectives have not had a chance to interview the juvenile victim yet, so hopefully we’ll be able to get some good information from the juvenile, but at this point in time that’s all we have,” Weilhammer said.

The mother of the injured girl told FOX59/CBS4 that her daughter was 14 years old and just graduated from middle school.

According to the mother, the girl was shot three times in the chest and back area and could wind up being paralyzed as a result of her injuries. The mother said she wasn't home at the time of the incident and was shocked to find out this happened to her daughter.

It was the girl's brother who allegedly found his injured sister lying in the dining room, according to the victim's mom. The mother said her daughter is known to stay out of trouble and she has no idea why this shooting happened.

IMPD has not weighed in on whether detectives believe this was a targeted shooter or an act of random violence.

Anyone with information is asked to contact IMPD at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS (8477).
