INDIANAPOLIS — The 108th Indy 500 is almost here, and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has released five tips to help fans stay safe on Sunday.
1. Plan ahead
IMPD is encouraging spectators to make a plan before heading to Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Police ask fans to know where they're planning to park and where they're sitting.
Patrons should also check to see which roads will be closed on race day. More information on Indianapolis 500 travel instructions is available here.
2. Hydrate
Fans attending this year's Indy 500 should make sure to bring water with them. High temperatures are expected to stretch into the mid-70s, despite there being a strong chance for rain during the day.
IMPD also reminds patrons to pack hats and sunscreen before they leave for the race.
3. Be patient
Police are expecting long lines and congested traffic on Sunday, especially after the race. IMPD indicated that its officers and IMS employees will be working hard to get everyone where they need to go quickly and safely on race day.
4. Respect rules and regulations
IMPD encourages fans to familiarize themselves with the rules and regulations of IMS. Police believe it is important for spectators to know what they can and can't bring to the track on race day.
IMPD is asking patrons to "follow instructions from event staff and law enforcement to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all race fans."
5. Don't drink and drive
Police are urging fans to make sure they have a safe and sober ride home from the race.
The 2024 Indy 500 is slated to begin at 12:45 p.m. Sunday. Gates open to the public at 6 a.m.
