INDIANAPOLIS -- New evidence is leading IMPD detectives to investigate a deadly crash from last month as a hit-and-run.

A memorial sits at 30th Street and Pawnee Drive where motorcyclist Brent Markey was killed in a crash on March 26. While investigators initially believed he died after losing control of his motorcycle, police now believe it was the result of a hit-and-run.

Police got a call just after midnight on March 26 stating a body was in the middle of the road at the intersection. A motorcycle had crashed into a fence. Police reports indicated investigators initially thought wet roads contributed to the crash.

"As oftentimes is the case, investigations progress and we learn more information," described Lt. Shane Foley with IMPD.

The department has since received new evidence, which has now shifted the investigation. Police believe a white work van was involved in the wreck and took off from the scene.

"Preliminarily, detectives believed this was a single-vehicle crash," Foley said. "And based upon information provided by members of our community, we were able to change that determination and we're hopeful that additional information will lead to the identity and arrest of the individual involved."

Now nearly a month later, pieces of Markey's motorcycle sit around the memorial off 30th and Pawnee as a reminder to everyone to drive safely to prevent similar losses.

"Particularly as we see more motorcycles on the road, we want to remind drivers to be more aware of those motorcycles," Foley said. "We want to remind motorcyclists to drive carefully."

IMPD also reminds drivers that it is against the law to leave the scene of an accident.

"We ask people to stay on scene," Foley said. "We ask them to render aid. Call 911 so that somebody else can provide medical assistance. Most importantly, don't leave this individual there."

IMPD is asking anyone with information connected to this crash to call the department.
