INDIANAPOLIS – A large portion of I-465 southbound will close for a month as part of an upcoming project set to start at the end of May.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation, crews will shut down I-465 southbound between I-70 and I-65 along the southeast corridor. Several ramps will also close. The changes only affect southbound I-465.

Work is set to begin on May 31. It will include pavement restoration, bridge deck patching and joint repairs.

While a large portion of the interstate will close entirely, drivers will also encounter some lane restrictions on I-465 southbound between 46th Street and the I-70/I-465 interchange. On weekdays, capacity will be reduced to three lanes along that stretch; it will go down to two lanes on the weekends.

Work is expected to last through the end of June. The recommended detour is I-70 westbound to I-65 southbound.

This is the second part of a six-phase project focused on restoration work on this section of I-465. The entire project is expected to wrap up in spring 2025.

The work schedule is subject to change, INDOT said. The agency reminded drivers to slow down in work zones and pay attention to changing traffic patterns.
