WAYNE COUNTY, Ind. — The Wayne County Sheriff's Office is investigating a murder-suicide case, according to a press release.

In an email sent Monday night, county sheriff Randy Retter reported that his deputies were dispatched to the first block of Farlow Road in Wayne County for welfare check on Monday. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they located two individuals suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Erika Painter, a 30-year-old from Centerville, was pronounced dead at the scene. Dustin Creech, a 38-year-old from Richmond, was transported by ambulance to Reid Hospital, per WCSO.

Creech was transferred to Miami Valley Hospital, where he later died.

WCSO indicated that its initial findings suggest the incident might be a case of murder-suicide. The deputies who first responded to the scene reported that they heard two shots.

Because the deputies heard shots shortly after their arrival, WCSO officials believe the shooting was still happening when police first made it to the scene. Deputies implemented life-saving measures with both victims until medics arrived.

"We believe this was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the public," Retter wrote in a prepared statement. "Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims during this difficult time."

Those with additional information on the incident are encouraged to call the Wayne County Sheriff's Office at (765) 973-9393.
