Semi fire closes I-74 eastbound near Greensburg

DECATUR COUNTY, Ind. – A semi truck carrying potatoes caught fire Monday morning, closing I-74 eastbound near Greensburg.

The Indiana Department of Transportation said the interstate would be closed for several hours. All lanes were blocked, according to an INDOT alert.

The Decatur County Sheriff’s Department said a semi carrying a load of potatoes caught fire near mile marker 136 on I-74 eastbound. Fire crews were working to clean the scene; the sheriff’s department indicated one lane would reopen shortly.

The incident brought traffic to a standstill near State Road 3 (Greensburg) at mile marker 133.9. According to Indiana State Police, emergency responders were dispatched around 6:30 a.m.

INDOT cameras showed a long line of traffic sitting on the interstate. Police were asking drivers to remain patient and stay in their cars as crews work to clear the scene.

By 8:20 a.m., traffic was again flowing in the area after one lane reopened.

In a 9:46 a.m. update, INDOT indicated the right lane would remain blocked for another two hours.

By 12:28 p.m., INDOT indicated the right lane was still blocked.
