WHITLEY COUNTY, Ind. — A pedestrian was killed during a car crash in Whitley County Friday night.
According to a press release, the crash occurred in the 6500 block of State Road 114 just after 6:30 p.m. Indiana State Police responded to the scene to investigate the crash.
Law enforcement has preliminarily determined that 83-year-old Carl W. Moehle of Roanoke was standing in the roadway in front of his residence when the driver of a white 2009 Chrysler van struck him. ISP reported that Moehle was picking up trash in the roadway when the van came over a nearby hill and hit him.
Police believe the driver of the van tried to take evasive action to avoid hitting Moehle. The impact of the crash still forced Moehle to be thrown into a side ditch.
ISP indicated that the Whitley County Coroner pronounced Moehle dead at the scene.
The driver of the van cooperated with investigators and submitted to a blood draw, as is standard for serious crashes in Indiana. The results of the blood testing are pending, per ISP.
State police are still actively investigating the crash. Once ISP is done looking into the incident, it will turn its findings over to the Whitley County Prosecutor.
