DANVILLE, Ind. — Issues with a water meter reading are reflecting in some high bills for Danville residents who may now face eviction.
Alyssa Brass has lived at her Danville apartment complex for several years with her husband, two dogs and three children with another on the way. On average, their household water bill is around $48.
“In our lease, it says it’s a flat fee for water, sewer and trash, which we have paid every month,” she said.
Their management, Hometown Property Group informed them that there was a metering issue back in 2022 - that was just now fixed.
In late April, she received an unsettling message.
“They sent us a text message saying we would be evicted if we did not pay $900,” said Brass.
After sharing the issue on social media, Brass connected with another mom who lived across the street with the same water bill issue.
“By the time they brought their baby home, they had an eviction notice on their doorstep,” she said. “Their baby was two weeks old when they got evicted."
Now the Brass family is trying to fight this outstanding payment.
“We contacted the Indiana Attorney General, and filed the complaint with them,” she said.
After she filed the complaint yesterday, Brass said the president of the management group reached out to Brass and hopes to reconnect in June to discuss how much she owes.
Following our interview, another member of the team informed her a new monthly fee would be calculated and they'll investigate her usage.
“We were planning on renewing our lease until this,” said Brass. “I don't want to have to worry about getting another unexpected bill, when I'm bringing home a newborn.”
Others who find themselves in a similar situation are encouraged to reach out to the Attorney General's Office.
