INDIANAPOLIS -- One person is dead after a reported shooting in the near northeast side of Indianapolis, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
At around 9:45 a.m. on Monday, IMPD officers responded to the 2300 block of Hillside Avenue on a call of a person shot.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a person who had injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. The person was pronounced dead at the scene.
IMPD officials said the body was found in the middle of the street and that they believe it was a targeted killing. On the street, police said they found shell casings.
"Preliminarily, detectives believe that this incident started with a disturbance between two individuals who are known to one another which resulted in gunfire and the victim being shot and deceased in the street," IMPD Lt. Shane Foley said at the scene.
IMPD said that detectives believe that they have identified a potential suspect. The Marion County Coroner's Office will release the name of the person who died after proper next-of-kin notification is made.
"You know, I feel like a broken record. We're saying this over and over again that resolving conflict with firearms or with any weapon is not the way to do it. We need people to be patient. We need people to be responsible," Foley said. "Our officers are out there every day trying to identify people who are using or possessing illegally firearms. They're going to continue doing that. But we can't be everywhere. We need the community's cooperation to help prevent things like this from happening."
The investigation is ongoing.
