ANDERSON, Ind. - The Bingham Square Apartments in Anderson is in the process of moving residents out after years of problems.
One of the last remaining tenants is Travis Ross, along with his girlfriend and pets.
“It's been a headache down here, I ain't gonna lie to you about that,” said Ross.
The two have lived at Bingham Square for about a year and a half. Over the last month, they haven't had electricity.
“We got a kerosene heater and it’s extremely difficult because I can't see nothing with a flashlight and everything,” said Ross.
With mold creeping up the walls and trash littering the empty rooms, the property owners are actively being sued by the Attorney General's office for abandonment and allowing the extreme state of disrepair.
The Anderson Housing Authority said the same owners are in charge of Madison Square Apartments, another complex in shambles.
“It was just due to poor management, but it wasn't due to the residents making it a bad situation on their own,” said Kimberly Townsend, CEO of the AHA.
Townsend says they have been working to move tenants out.
“We have a housing shortage, so that's been tough, but we've asked our landlords that we partner with, hey, help us out,” she said.
Since 2020, around 40 families have been removed from the infested property.
Townsend says the city has been helping with some of the recent move-outs, paying for the first month of rent, security, and utility deposits at their new homes.
"It's really bad to see that some of the residents didn't want to leave, and I understand that, because that was their home," said Townsend.
As for Ross, he's unsure where he's going next.
"I hate that I got in this situation anyway, but it is what it is,” he said. “Try to keep your head up and keep going, you know."
The Anderson Housing Authority said there are investors interested in purchasing the property, but are unable to do so until the lawsuit is resolved.
However, Ross has doubts that there's any hope of saving what's left of Bingham Square.
AHA is unsure if and when the facility could be turned around, but hopes it's in the near future.
