Rain tonight with another round to open work week Monday

The warming trend started Saturday with highs across Central Indiana well into the 40s. These are numbers around 5° or so above normal. It's a nice change of pace, especially with how cold this month has been so far. The increased temperatures occurred due to a warm front moving NE toward us. This same front also comes with our next weathermaker, where rain moves in tonight.

Areas in Iowa and northwest Illinois are in the "cold sector" of this system. Because of that, those areas received ice. Since we are warmer, rain is the main form of precipitation we'll see. This will be the rainiest weekend since June for Central Indiana and it comes as several counties are still in a drought.

Expect showers to continue moving east into Saturday evening. We'll have the rain around for the evening, overnight and early morning hours Sunday. We're calling this rain round #1 because another is on tap shortly after. Around half to three-quarters of an inch of rain is possible with this round.

The daytime Sunday will have dry hours throughout the day. However, some patchy/lingering drizzle is in the cards for the day as well. We are keeping high temperatures Sunday in the upper 40s. However if the clouds break, we could see a few peeks of afternoon sun and highs could hit 50°. But with the lingering drizzle, not every hometown will see this.

Rain chances for round #2 go up after Midnight with showers (and isolated thunderstorms) being around most of the daytime Monday. A few rumbles of thunder are possible, otherwise no severe threat exists. WIth increased southwest flow bringing us those breezy winds, highs Monday will soar into the upper 50s with a 60° reading or two not out of the question. This will be the case with the rain moving out in time for Monday's p.m. commute.

When all is said and done, Central Indiana will receive some healthy rains from this. Most spots will end up around 1-1.5" with isolated amounts closer to 2.0".

The work week will fluctuate a bit with temperatures thanks to this system. It will start with highs 15-18° above normal. Then, a midweek cold front will drive our temperatures down back into the 30s for Thursday-Friday and next weekend. That cold front passage will bring additional rain overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. We could also see a few flurries Friday. The warmer temperatures will flip the script on what has been the coldest December to-date in 11 years and nearly 11° colder than last December.

While the immediate days leading up to the holidays look to be cooler, the longer-range forecast is calling for slightly above-normal temperatures to be favored for the holidays. The latest 8-14 day outlook (below) shows just that for the week of December 22nd -28th.
