TIPTON COUNTY, Ind. — The Indiana State Police is investigating a vehicle pursuit that began Thursday morning in Tipton County and ended in Hamilton County, resulting in one fatality.
According to ISP, a deputy with the Tipton County Sheriff's Office attempted to stop a 2014 Ford Fusion just after 5:30 a.m. The vehicle was traveling southbound on U.S. 31 near County Road 100 South, and police said it was speeding and violating traffic laws.
The vehicle failed to stop, leading to a pursuit.
ISP said the Fusion continued southbound on U.S. 31 and entered Hamilton County. Then, after passing 276th Street, the vehicle crossed the median for unknown reasons. Per police, this led the Fusion to enter the northbound lanes, veer into a ditch on the east side of the road and roll over before stopping.
Two occupants were inside the vehicle, ISP said. One of them surrendered to deputies and was taken into custody, but was transported to a local hospital with severe injuries where they currently remain.
However, the other occupant fled eastbound into a nearby field. ISP said deputies used a Hamilton County K-9 unit to track the suspect down.
That individual was located and appeared to have collapsed.
While life-saving efforts were attempted, ISP reported that the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Autopsy reports indicate that the death was caused by injuries sustained when the Ford Fusion crashed.
The investigation remains ongoing. At this time, no names of suspects have been provided.
