TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- A Terre Haute man has been charged with attempted murder after police say he attacked his ex-girlfriend and fractured the skull of another man during an altercation last week.
Officers with the Terre Haute Police Department were called on Nov. 26 to the 3300 block of S. U.S. Highway 41 in response to reports of a suspected battery. THPD said officers arrived and found a man and a woman with "severe" injuries.
Preliminary information indicates a man, who police identified as 46-year-old Marc Yates, had allegedly violated a protective order and was stalking and threatening his ex-girlfriend. To avoid Yates, THPD said the woman parked her vehicle in a parking lot away from where she works and reportedly asked a friend to be with her.
Yates managed to find the man and woman and approached their vehicle while holding a "club-style" weapon, THPD said.
An altercation ensued that left the male victim with a skull fracture and other life-threatening injuries. The woman sustained a fractured ankle and other "extensive" injuries, according to THPD.
Yates was eventually detained by police on Dec. 2 at a residence on 4th Avenue with assistance from the THPD U.S. Marshal Task Force Office.
Yates was arrested and transported to the Vigo County Jail where he was preliminarily charged with attempted murder (level 1 felony) and two counts of aggravated battery (level 3 felony).
Jail records also indicate that Yate's cash bond has been set at $100,000.
According to online court records, Yates is due to appear in Vigo Superior Court 6 for a pre-trial hearing on March 11, 2025, at 1:30 p.m.
