(WXIN/WTTV) — Indiana State Police are warning Hoosiers that it is illegal to put Christmas lights on a car during the holiday season.

ISP's Lowell District posted on social media Tuesday that they have seen an increase in cars being decked out in festive, colored lights as the weather gets colder. This, ISP said, is illegal.

The post shows an incident investigated by Bolingbrook, Illinois police in which a white car was decorated with exterior lights. The lights were green, red, purple and yellow in color.

"While this is the Bolingbrook Police Department, we have been seeing a lot of this lately as well here in Indiana," the post read. "This may look festive, it is not legal and it is a distraction. Please don't drive with Christmas lights draped over your car."

FOX59/CBS4 has also received reports of drivers in the Indianapolis area using cars with Christmas lights on the outside.

Reporter Jesse Wells captured one instance of a car parked in a Brownsburg parking lot.

According to Indiana Code 9-21-7-10, using colored lights anywhere outside the front and back of a non-emergency vehicle is illegal.

"A person may not drive or move a vehicle or equipment upon a highway with a lamp or device on the vehicle or equipment displaying light other than white or amber visible from directly in front of the center of the vehicle or equipment," the law reads.

Banned light colors include:

  • Blue
  • Green
  • Red
  • Red and white
  • Red and blue
