INDIANAPOLIS — An afternoon snowfall has led to slick roads and countless crashes across the Indianapolis area.

As the snow began to fall in the Indianapolis area after 2 p.m., the police radio chatter began to grow as crash after crash was reported due to slick conditions. Since 3 p.m., Indiana State Police confirmed that troopers responded to 136 crashes in the Indianapolis District.

Several more crashes and slide-offs have been reported across Boone and Hendricks counties throughout Monday evening.

On the south side, at least four separate crashes turned the I-465 and I-65 interchange into a traffic logjam. Multiple lanes were closed in both westbound and northbound directions near the interchange.

In Lebanon, southbound traffic ground to a halt due to a crash on I-65 just south of State Road 39. The sheriff's department also temporarily closed Whitestown Parkway from SR 267 to S 425 E due to hazardous conditions.

To the west, traffic alerts popped up on I-70 with INDOT alerting drivers of a crash blocking one lane of westbound traffic near the State Road 39 exit toward Monrovia.

Commuters heading north on I-69 also ran into stopped and slowed traffic due to a crash near State Road 13's exit toward Fortville. This crash closed the center lane until 5 p.m.

On the east side, INDOT reported multiple cars sliding off an exit ramp near the I-465 and I-70 interchange.

Within Indy, IMPD is scrambling as dozens upon dozens of crash and slide-off calls come in.

Multiple agencies including the Boone County Sheriff's Department and the Lafayette Police Department issued warnings to commuters stressing the slick roads. They asked drivers to use "extreme caution," especially at intersections.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
