Today is a busy travel day ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday! We are starting off on a dry note with overcast skies. Temperatures are in the mid to upper 30s across the region. You may not need an umbrella early in the day, but you will want to have it on hand for the afternoon!

A storm system is going to track over Arkansas, Kentucky, and Tennessee within the next 24 to 36 hours. Central Indiana is located on the northside of the storm’s path, which means a nearby pool of colder air is going to impact the type of precipitation we see tonight.

Light rainfall moves into the area this afternoon and the coverage will become more widespread by the evening hours. Colder air moves in late tonight, which will allow the rain to transition to a wintry mix/wet snow. Most of the snow is expected to melt on contact and will mostly be contained to grassy, elevated surfaces.

Not everyone will see accumulating snowfall from this event. Those who receive snow may have a coating on the ground by tomorrow morning. However, there is still a chance for 1” to 2” pockets in isolated locations. Be sure to tune in this evening for any updates ahead of the wintry weather we see tonight!

Roadways should be primarily wet tonight and tomorrow, but there may be a few slick spots on bridges/overpasses due to the snow and lows near freezing. The wintry mix will move out of the area by Thanksgiving Day. There is a chance for lingering flurries/drizzle early in the morning. By the afternoon, skies turn mostly cloudy with a high near 40° in Indianapolis.

Be prepared for the coldest air of the season by this weekend! Highs will only rise near 30° Saturday through Monday with lows in the teens. Wind chills may even drop to the single digits during the morning hours!
